The World Public Sector Report 2025, published by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, explores how Supreme Audit Institutions (SAIs) contribute to the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Supreme Audit Institutions are independent public bodies responsible for auditing how governments use public funds and reporting their findings to parliament and the public, helping to strengthen transparency, accountability, and trust in public institutions.
The report focuses on:
Providing a global overview of how SAIs support SDG implementation
Examining how the role and positioning of SAIs within national accountability systems have evolved since 2016, particularly through their work on the SDGs
Special attention is given, where relevant, to Least Developed Countries (LDCs) and Small Island Developing States (SIDS).
The report also highlights the key challenges and opportunities SAIs face in supporting SDG-related policies and monitoring. Overall, it aims to inform national and international discussions on how strengthening public accountability can help accelerate progress toward the SDGs between now and 2030.
