BEIRUT – The Ministry of Youth and Sports, in partnership with UNICEF and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), launched a series of youth consultations titled “Youth Advisory Meetings: Towards a National Youth Strategy 2026–2030” on Wednesday.

The event was held at the Lebanese University in Hadath, with the participation of Minister of Youth and Sports Dr. Nora Bairakdarayan, Minister of Education Dr. Rima Karam, Minister of AI Dr. Kamal Shehadeh, representatives from UNICEF and UNFPA, university leaders, and students from across Lebanon.

Minister Shehadeh underscored the importance of technology, AI, and digital skills, while Minister Karam stressed integrating youth perspectives into education reform to prepare students for active civic and professional roles.

Minister Karam emphasized that youth must be active partners in shaping Lebanon’s education system and future policies.

Prof. Bassam Badran, President of the Lebanese University, opened the event, emphasizing that the strategy would be built from the voices of young people, not in closed offices.

He highlighted youth challenges, including high unemployment, migration, and political uncertainty, while praising their creativity in technology, agriculture, cultural initiatives, and volunteerism.

“The Lebanese University aims to be a platform where these voices transform into a shared national vision,” Badran said, calling for students’ active participation in shaping opportunities for education, employment, innovation, and civic engagement.

UNFPA representative Anandita Philipos stressed the central role of youth in national development and the importance of providing young people with seats at decision-making tables.

She outlined five strategic areas: civil engagement, peace and security, education, employment, health, and migration. “Youth participation strengthens social cohesion and ensures policies reflect their real needs,” she said.

UNICEF representative Marco Luigi Corsi praised Lebanon’s governmental commitment to youth engagement. “When youth are involved in policymaking, strategies align with their aspirations, ensuring success,” he said.

The event concluded with an overview of the draft strategy by international expert Dr. Suhail Marin, which will guide youth empowerment initiatives, civic engagement, and opportunities for Lebanon’s next generation over the coming five years.
