LEBANON – The Lebanese film “Someday, a Child” by Lebanese filmmaker Marie Rose Osta (written, directed, and edited in collaboration with Alex Bentiка) (2026, 27 minutes) won the Golden Bear for Best Short Film at the 76th edition of the Berlin International Film Festival, where it had its world premiere in the short film program.

As she received the Golden Bear award, the director said: “I made a film about a child with superpowers who shoots down two warplanes because their roar invaded his sleep. This is what cinematic imagination does: it gives the powerless the ability to reverse the equation.”

The director also denounced the “collapse of international law” in the region.

She added: “In reality, children in Gaza, throughout Palestine, and in my country Lebanon do not have superpowers to protect them. No child should need superpowers to survive a genocide supported by the veto power and the collapse of international law…”

Starring Khaled Hassan and Antoine Daher, the film takes us into the world of an eleven-year-old boy who possesses extraordinary power beyond the comprehension of those around him.

He grows up in a quiet village accompanied by the constant roar of warplanes, a sound that becomes part of his awareness, formation, and relationship with the world.

Marie Rose Asta is considered one of the most prominent young voices in Lebanese cinema. Her previous film “Then Darkness Fell” won the Jury Prize at the Cairo International Film Festival. Today, she continues her ambitions from Paris through the studio “Les Flâneurs Films,” supporting independent cinema.
