BEIRUT — Beirut’s Camille Chamoun Sports City Stadium has been converted into an emergency shelter for families displaced by the recent wave of violence across Lebanon.
Minister of Social Affairs Hanine Sayed announced Saturday that the stadium would open the same evening to host displaced families registered with the Beirut municipality.
The move was made in coordination with local associations, the Lebanese Red Cross, and the Beirut municipality to expand the country’s shelter capacity amid the escalating humanitarian crisis.
The decision follows mass evacuations from South Lebanon, the Bekaa Valley, and Beirut’s southern suburbs after a series of Israeli airstrikes targeted these areas earlier this week, forcing hundreds of thousands of residents to seek refuge in safer regions.
According to Minister Sayed, more than 112,000 displaced people are currently staying in 514 official shelter centers across the country.
An additional 454,000 people have registered through the government’s relief platform as authorities attempt to track and assist those forced to leave their homes.
The minister urged all displaced individuals who have not yet registered to do so to facilitate the delivery of aid and services.
