LEBANON – The Ministry of Economy and Trade announced that, in light of economic challenges, it has put in place a proactive plan to secure food supplies and ensure basic goods are available across Lebanon.
The plan also aims to keep supply chains running smoothly and prevent market disruptions, price manipulation, or unfair profit-taking.
The Ministry said it is taking the following actions:
1. Using Strategic Stockpiles
Current stock levels of essential goods, including food, wheat, and fuel, are enough to cover several months of domestic consumption.
The Ministry monitors stock levels daily and coordinates with importers to ensure goods reach markets without interruptions or monopoly practices.
2. Securing Additional Supplies
The Ministry ensures a steady flow of supplies into Lebanon. Actions include:
• Estimating national needs for the coming months.
• Encouraging importers to bring in extra stock early, without waiting for global price changes.
• Coordinating with shipping companies to speed up deliveries to Beirut port, other ports, and border crossings.
3. Maintaining Supply Chains
The Ministry works with relevant authorities to make sure goods reach consumers. Measures include:
• Prioritizing unloading ships carrying food and essential goods.
• Speeding up customs and administrative procedures.
• Ensuring smooth transport from storage centers to markets.
• Monitoring wheat daily to supply mills and bakeries on time.
• Prioritizing fuel distribution to vital institutions like hospitals and bakeries.
4. Monitoring Prices
The Ministry developed a real-time database to track prices of fuel and basic goods. This helps detect unjustified price hikes and take immediate action.
The National Price Policy Council is also activated to maintain fairness.
5. Strengthening Consumer Protection
The Consumer Protection Directorate increased inspections in markets, warehouses, and stores. Violations are reported to the courts. Shops that hoard, manipulate prices, or refuse to sell can be shut down.
Finally, the Ministry asks citizens to report violations through the MoET Digital Services app. Importers and traders are encouraged to use official online platforms for faster, transparent procedures.
The Ministry confirms its daily follow-up and coordination with authorities, the private sector, and international partners to protect food security, stabilize markets, and serve citizens’ interests.
