Global Biodiversity Under Threat, UN Warns of Widespread Consequences
UN warns that accelerating biodiversity loss threatens food systems, healthcare, and global ecological stability.
WORLD – The United Nations has warned of a continued global decline in biodiversity, stressing that it is the fundamental pillar upon which human civilizations were built and on which billions of people depend in their daily lives.
The organization noted that fisheries provide food for around 3 billion people, supplying nearly 20% of the world’s animal protein, while plants account for more than 80% of the human diet.
It also pointed out that about 80% of people in rural areas of developing countries rely on traditional plant-based medicine for primary healthcare.
The United Nations stressed that the ongoing loss of biodiversity poses a direct threat to global public health and food security, despite significant technological progress in the modern world.
It further emphasized that humans remain entirely dependent on healthy ecological systems that provide water, food, medicine, clothing, fuel, shelter, and energy, calling for the protection of biological resources and the restoration of damaged ecosystems to ensure the sustainability of resources for future generations.
