LEBANON – The Lebanese Ministry of Agriculture has launched a new initiative, supported by the People’s Republic of China, aimed at strengthening the protection of the agricultural sector and forests through the integration of drone technology into Lebanon’s agricultural and environmental operations.
This comes within the ministry’s broader strategy for digital transformation and the development of smart agriculture.
The initiative was launched during a ceremony held in the town of Qornayel, in the presence of Minister of Agriculture Nizar Hani, Chinese Ambassador to Lebanon Shen Shandong, as well as representatives of the Lebanese Army, municipalities, international organizations, and environmental and agricultural associations.
Hani: An Investment in the Future of Lebanese Agriculture
Minister Hani stated that the project represents an investment in the future of Lebanese agriculture, noting that drones will contribute to more precise and efficient spraying operations, pest and disease control, and the rational use of water, pesticides, and fertilizers.
This, he said, will positively impact agricultural productivity as well as environmental and public health safety.
He added that the new technology will also support agricultural tracking systems and food safety through the collection of accurate field data and monitoring of various production stages, enhancing the quality of Lebanese products and their compliance with international standards and market access requirements.
Hani also highlighted the importance of the project in protecting forests and natural resources, especially amid increasing wildfire risks linked to climate change. He explained that drones provide advanced capabilities for early monitoring, damage assessment, and real-time data support for response teams.
For his part, the Chinese ambassador emphasized that the project reflects the depth of agricultural and environmental cooperation between China and Lebanon. He noted that the drones are equipped with precision spraying systems that help combat pests efficiently while reducing environmental impact and supporting the protection of natural pollinators, particularly bees.
Seven Advanced Drones
The project includes the delivery of seven advanced JT20 drones to the Ministry of Agriculture. Each unit is equipped with a 20-liter tank and can cover between 9 and 11 hectares per hour. The drones also feature advanced terrain-following systems and real-time surveillance cameras operating both day and night.
The Ministry of Agriculture affirmed that the initiative falls within its 2026–2035 strategy aimed at modernizing the agricultural sector and strengthening its resilience to climate, economic, and environmental challenges.
This will be achieved through the adoption of modern technologies and precision agriculture, contributing to food security, the protection of natural resources, and the achievement of sustainable development goals.
