LEBANON - The United Nations World Food Program (WFP) has received a $1 million contribution from the Government of Japan to provide life-saving food assistance to around 59,000 vulnerable people affected by the war in Lebanon.

The funding will support the delivery of food assistance to families facing displacement, economic hardship, and ongoing insecurity, as humanitarian needs continue to rise across the country.

Many households remain displaced, while others are still struggling to recover from the effects of Lebanon’s prolonged economic crisis and ongoing instability.

The WFP said the contribution will help affected families meet their basic food needs and regain a degree of stability amid continued uncertainty.

“When people are forced to flee their homes or lose their sources of income, the effects of conflict extend far beyond the immediate crisis,” said Anne Valand, Deputy Country Director of WFP Lebanon. “Timely food assistance helps families regain a sense of stability at a time when uncertainty remains high.”

Valand thanked the Government and people of Japan for their continued support, which she said enables WFP to maintain assistance for the country’s most vulnerable communities.

Japanese Ambassador to Lebanon Kenji Yokota said Japan remains committed to supporting the Lebanese people during the current difficult period.

“Through our partnership with the World Food Programme, we contribute to strengthening food security and protecting human security by ensuring that the most vulnerable families affected by the recent escalation of conflict receive the urgent assistance they need,” Yokota said.

He added that Japan would continue working with partners to support relief and recovery efforts in Lebanon.

With this latest contribution, Japan’s total funding to WFP operations in Lebanon since the beginning of 2026 has reached $3 million.

The funding allows the organization to respond to changing humanitarian needs through different forms of assistance, ensuring that support reaches those most in need.

WFP continues to provide food assistance to vulnerable populations across Lebanon as the country faces overlapping challenges, including displacement, economic instability, and the consequences of renewed insecurity.
