AMERICA - Pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca has signed a strategic agreement with insitro, an artificial intelligence (AI) company focused on developing new medicines, to identify potential treatments for liver and heart muscle diseases.
The partnership will use AI to help researchers understand what causes metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH), a liver disease linked to metabolic problems, and cardiomyopathies, a group of conditions that affect the heart muscle. Both disease groups present significant treatment challenges.
The partnership aims to identify new opportunities for drug development and move promising research towards potential new treatments.
AI to Help Identify Causes of Disease
Under the agreement, Insitro will use its Virtual Human AI platform to analyse large amounts of human and cell data to identify biological and genetic factors that may cause or contribute to these diseases.
The platform uses AI to help researchers understand how diseases develop and identify potential targets for new medicines. Insitro will also work on research targets selected by AstraZeneca, advancing them from early discovery towards candidates that could proceed to further development.
AstraZeneca will contribute its expertise in testing medicines, conducting clinical trials and navigating regulatory requirements.
Agreement Worth Up to $1.5 Billion
Under the financial terms, Insitro will receive an upfront payment of $40 million from AstraZeneca. It could also receive up to approximately $1.46 billion in additional payments if the research programmes reach specified development and commercial milestones.
The agreement also includes potential royalties of less than 10% on global sales of medicines resulting from the collaboration, under the company's single-digit royalty terms.
AstraZeneca will have exclusive worldwide rights to develop and commercialise selected programmes identified through the partnership.
Focus on Liver and Heart Conditions
MASH is a liver disease associated with metabolic problems, including excess fat in the liver and inflammation. It can progress to scarring and serious liver damage.
Cardiomyopathies affect the heart muscle and can make it harder for the heart to pump blood effectively. Depending on the type and severity, these conditions can lead to serious complications.
By using AI to analyse biological data, the companies aim to improve their understanding of how these diseases develop and identify potential new treatments.
The agreement highlights the growing use of AI in pharmaceutical research, where the technology can help scientists analyse complex data and identify possible starting points for developing medicines. However, any potential treatments identified through the collaboration would still need to undergo further research and testing before they could become available to patients.
