LEBANON – More than 100 companies have subscribed to Starlink through Alfa, as Lebanon expands access to satellite internet services and explores the introduction of competing providers.
Prime Minister Nawaf Salam highlighted the role of Starlink in strengthening connectivity, particularly in areas lacking advanced telecommunications infrastructure, during a meeting held at the Grand Serail on Wednesday, November 4.
Salam said the service is intended to complement existing telecommunications networks rather than replace them. He added that it could help businesses maintain operations and communication with partners and customers, even when traditional networks experience disruptions.
He also stressed that Starlink would not hold exclusive rights to provide satellite internet services in Lebanon, revealing that the government is holding discussions with OneWeb to introduce a competing service offering similar solutions.
According to Alfa Chairman and General Manager Rafiq Haddad, more than 100 companies have subscribed to Starlink through the company since the launch of its second phase, which expanded access to businesses and institutions.
The first phase of the rollout activated the service for 37 entities, including 20 ministries, public institutions and security agencies, 11 hospitals, three embassies, two non-governmental organizations, and Rmeish Municipality, which hosted the first activation.
Haddad added that Alfa has requested an additional 500 devices to meet demand from companies on the waiting list.
The expansion forms part of Alfa's four-year digital transformation plan, which includes upgrading telecommunications infrastructure, introducing fifth-generation (5G) technology, developing digital services, and using artificial intelligence to improve network management and customer services.
He also reported that Alfa had increased its network readiness in southern Lebanon from 70% to 90%, despite war-related damage. The company has deployed seven mobile telecommunications stations serving more than 125,000 subscribers across over 30 villages in the south.
Meanwhile, Alfa's transfers to the Lebanese Treasury increased by 14% in 2025, with a further 10% increase projected for 2026.
