LEBANON – Hours after a ceasefire between Lebanon and Israel began, thousands of displaced people started returning to south Lebanon as a key bridge over the Litani River reopened.
The Qasmiyeh bridge, an important route to the south, was bombed shortly before the ceasefire, blocking access to the area.
The Lebanese army used bulldozers to clear the damage and reopen the road, allowing long lines of cars to move south.
Many people said they do not know the condition of their homes but are returning anyway, carrying basic items and hoping to rebuild even if their houses are destroyed.
The war has forced over a million people to leave their homes in Lebanon and has damaged many roads and bridges.
Despite the damage and uncertainty, returnees said they were relieved to go back to their towns and land, but warned that the situation is still unstable.
