LEBANON – Minister of Public Works and Transport Fayez Rasamny has unveiled a plan to develop public transport in Lebanon, including a gradual expansion from 24 routes in the initial phase to 54 routes in the future, alongside the operation of around 300 diesel and electric buses. The plan aims to serve more than 60,000 passengers daily.
The plan was announced during a meeting on public transport development organized by the Ministry of Public Works and Transport in cooperation with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) at the Grand Serail, under the patronage and in the presence of Prime Minister Nawaf Salam.
Rasamny noted that around 60 buses are currently operating across 12 routes, carrying more than 8,000 passengers daily. He added that preparations are underway to launch five additional routes soon.
The plan aims to establish a national public transport network connecting regions with employment and service centers, extending to Qlayaat Airport. It also seeks to provide regular schedules, affordable fares, and safe stations accessible to different categories of passengers.
The plan also relies on cooperation with the private sector and international partners to secure the necessary funding and implement the expansion phases, ensuring the continuity and development of the service.
