LEBANON – The Ministry of Education and Higher Education has announced that it will conduct an exceptional, one-time national assessment during the 2026–2027 academic year, targeting children who are not enrolled in formal education and who have previously participated in non-formal education programmes provided by organisations or entities partnering with the Ministry.
The assessment aims to measure the academic competencies and skills children have acquired through non-formal education programmes and compare their learning outcomes with the Lebanese national curriculum. This will help assess their learning levels and support their transition to recognised formal education pathways in Lebanon.
The assessment may also help non-Lebanese children document and evaluate their educational achievements, supporting their transition to recognised education systems in their countries of origin, including Syria, upon return.
The assessment targets children who are currently out of formal education and who have previously participated in non-formal education programmes provided by organisations or centres partnering with the Ministry of Education and Higher Education.
According to the Ministry’s decision, the assessment will measure academic competencies based on the Lebanese curriculum for Grades 1, 2 and 3 of basic education, covering Arabic, a foreign language and mathematics.
Relevant authorities have called on parents whose children meet the criteria to contact the NGO or centre where the child attended a non-formal education programme to inquire about the registration process and provide the required information.
The Ministry of Education and Higher Education has not yet announced the date of the assessment, the locations where it will be conducted, or the mechanism for assigning children to the different centres. Further details will be announced at a later stage.
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) noted in an announcement published on 13 August 2026 that information regarding registration and the assessment would be updated as soon as further official details become available from the Ministry.
